Bedside Lamps – Everything You Need to Know

A Little History

For more than a century now, we’ve been decorating our bedrooms with colorful and beautiful bedside lamps to shed a shimmer.

When we say bedside lamp, the most common design that comes into our minds is the traditional bedside lamp which has a base, often shaped like a pot or a vase, and a steel bar through it which holds the bulb and the shade. It looks like a mini tree.

Designs influenced by nature were  common practice at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. There were a lot of reforms that were taking place and arts & sciences were affected drastically.

Around 1911, in a bid to move away from the Victorian-era styled designs, Dirk van Erp became one of the first people to invent the bedside lamp design that we adore and love even today.

Though there are multiple variations today, the main elements of this design are constantly retained. Thus, making this design the most versatile.

Not only are bedside lamps a source of light but they are mainly an integral part of the overall design. A small lamp has the power to profoundly affect the overall look and feel of your bedroom.

That’s the only reason why bedside lamps come in so many shapes, sizes, and designs.

Different Types of Bedside Lamps

There are literally hundreds of designs available in the market today. It can be a daunting task when searching and planning to buy one, be it online or offline.

To make the process easier, we have broadly categorized the lights into eight categories based on their various design attributes and how they can suit your bedroom. This should help you with the decision-making process.

Traditional Lamps

When we talk about traditional bedside lamps, we refer to the modern version of the antique lamp we mentioned above. The most well-known bedside lamps are the ones with a fabric shade material and a solid base.

These lamps look classy and they perfectly serve their purpose of providing necessary illumination in the bedroom. You can even use its light for reading your favorite book without feeling disturbed or you can use it to have a thoughtful conversation with your partner.

Obviously, most traditional styled lamps come with the ability to reduce or increase brightness. If you are looking for a classy and traditional style for your bedroom, these bedside lamps are perfect.

Metal Lamps

Bedside lamps made with metal frames or metal elements such as steel, bronze, etc., tend to look more rugged in nature and can be used to give your bedroom a rusty yet classy look.

While there are different types of metal lamps that can be used based on an occasion, most of them are used to make a bold statement or bring boldness into the room.

So if you are looking for any of these attributes as part of your overall bedroom design, you can use metal lamps.

Modern Lamps

Modern bedside lamps are technologically advanced and they have totally different designs. Breaking the barrier would be an appropriate statement to attribute to their designs.

Most modern designs have abstract designs with intrinsically embedded bulbs which give a contemporary look. They attract many millennial and Gen Z crowds that want to have a minimalist design and save space, yet serve the purpose.

So, if you want to have a modern and contemporary setup in your home and bedroom, then modern bedside lamps would be a perfect addition to your space.

Wooden Lamps

Wood and warmth have always gone hand-in-hand. Wooden designs give the house a warm look and make you feel you are home. It applies to bedside lamps as well.

The wooden lamps come in multiple varieties. The most common ones have a strong wooden base with either soft or bright colors which set the tone. You also get a mix of a wooden base and a shade made out of leaves or pinewood. This mixture is often used in Oorjaa lights as we want to give our lights a natural feel.

If you want your bedroom to feel natural, homely, and soft, adding wooden bedside lamps will make a big difference.

Hand Crafted Lamps

This is our specialty at Oorjaa. Hand-crafted lamps create a beautiful vibe and they are often intriguing. They are made with multiple elements such as  cement, banana fibre, lokta fibre etc.

They come in different styles and fashions. So, it gives you more leverage on what to choose from, based on the style statement or the mood you want to set for your bedroom or hallway or even your living room at night.

If you are artistic and want to give your room an artistic feel, hand-crafted bedside lamps are the best.  They also last longer because they are made from organic materials which are sustainable.

Antique Lamps

As the name suggests, if you want to add antique elements to your space then antique lamp designs will do the job.

Most antique lamps follow a certain concept. Maybe replicating some societal elements from a previous era. Generally, they tend to look classy in nature and they suit only specific setups.

If you have a home which has a more classical or traditional look with antique furniture and settings, then these lamps will undoubtedly add significant value to your space.

Children’s Lamps

Children’s bedside lamps can have a great effect on your child’s cognitive processes. They are fun and it helps them  smile before they sleep every day.

In both cases, boys and girls always look at these lamps before they sleep and dream big. That’s definitely the best way to improve your thought processes.

So, make a wise choice when it comes to buying a bedside lamp for your children.

Different Colors & Materials

Now that we have broadly classified the various types of bedside lamps you can choose from, the next question that might require an answer is “what color and material should I consider?”

To begin with, the color is totally dependent on the color of your room. For example,If you have a room with a solid tone and you want your light to blend in perfectly, you have to buy a lamp with dark or solid tones.

Likewise, if you want a better contrast in your current setting, you would need a brighter color to create a different vibe. So, the choice of color predominantly lies on what vibe you want to set in your room.

When it comes to material, each material conveys a different message and sheds a different light. The seven types mentioned above also include the materials.

At Oorjaa, we mainly use natural materials like fiber paper made out of banana leaves, fiber weaves, concrete, and cement to create the shades. We use pine wood, steel, and stone to create the base and foundation. As mentioned earlier, all designs are handcrafted.

Together they create a natural look and add an exotic feel to your bedroom.

At the end of the day, it all depends on the design of your room and what elements you want to add to the room to make it look better. If you can answer that question, then choosing the right bedside lamp would not be a problem at all.

You may want to check or consult with an interior designer if you are unable to quickly make a decision.
